Current targeted sports programs include:
Siblin Sports Program:
The Center is located just south of Beirut on
the coast of Lebanon. The center educates young men and woman
in such fields as mechanics, electronics, computer training,
and hairdressing. The campus includes four outdoor basketball
courts, one indoor basketball court, and a soccer field all
badly in need of restoration. The initial phase of the project
will allow UNRWA to offer sports programs to the students at
Siblin during the academic year and in summer months to area
youth through camp programs. Our hope is to develop a strong
athletic program for students in the Beirut area and eventually
inter camp sports competitions.
Why Sports?
Young people all over the world love sports
and if you do an Internet search for leadership development
and sports you will find two things: First, most schools list
sports as a key feature under the heading “leadership
development;” and second, you will find countless articles
on the value of sports as a means of building confidence, self-esteem,
and leadership amongst young people.

Today we know
that crowded camp conditions, a lack of extracurricular
activities, poor athletic facilities, physical barriers,
the recent Intifada, and too much down time leave Palestinian
refugee youth without adequate sports facilities and athletic programs.
If you tour the region in the five areas of UNRWA
operation,
you will see kids with soccer balls playing in small alleyways
or playing basketball with little or no equipment.
Our goal is to refurbish existing sports
facilities at UNRWA
schools, to establish year round sports opportunities
focusing on
soccer and basketball for girls and boys. |
Siblin Facilities Today
Please take a tour of the Siblin sports campus
facilities (below) as they exist today, and help us to create
this badly needed sports facility and program that in the long
run has the potential to serve thousands of needy children.
If we build it………… they will come.
The Siblin Center’s
existing outdoor basketball court, indoor basketball court with
a buckled unsafe floor, and the soccer field overlooking the
sea.
