Internships

American Friends of UNRWA (AFU) is seeking 2012 spring interns for its DC office.

All applicants must be current or recent undergraduate or graduate students, depending on the internship position. Applicants must have excellent verbal and written communications skills, be highly experienced in email communications, and proficient in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, and Powerpoint).

Spring 2012 Events Intern

The Events Intern will assist staff in planning and holding AFU events, and will represent AFU at external events in the area. The ideal candidate will have an interest in event planning, fundraising, or nonprofit management. Applicants must have confidence in reaching out on behalf of the organization and a desire to tackle new and challenging tasks throughout the course of her/his internship.

The spring 2012 Events Intern will be primarily responsible for assisting staff in the organization and implementation of a 5K charity race in the DC area.

Duties:

  • Assist in the planning, promotion, and implementation of events
  • Attend university events to recruit runners for 5K
  • Assist in soliciting donations and cooperate sponsorships
  • Recruit and organize volunteers
  • Log progress to ensure that preparations for the 5K stay on schedule

Experience in fundraising, event planning, or managing volunteers is a plus. Interest in the Middle East, Israel-Palestine issues, refugee issues, or the UN, are also a plus.

Hours: 20hrs/week
Schedule: Negotiable

Spring 2012 Communications Intern

The communication intern will be responsible for the daily management of all of AFU’s social media accounts and the drafting of press releases. The ideal candidate will have an educational or work-related background in communications, be comfortable representing the organization online through social media and blogs, and experienced in fact-checking, research, and writing. Applicants with no prior communications/PR experience, but with experience in video and podcast editing will also be considered.

Duties:

  • Scan news daily for articles, videos, and blogs relating to UNRWA, Palestine, and Palestine Refugees
  • Maintain and increase presence on social media
  • Maintain profiles on social media sites
  • Research, edit, and write blog entries
  • Assist staff in maintaining organization’s blog
  • Draft press releases for staff review and revision
  • Compile fact sheets for distribution
  • Additional duties may apply based on applicant’s experience

Experience in public relations, communications, and blogging is a plus. Interest in the Middle East, Israel-Palestine issues, refugee issues, or the UN, are also a plus.

Spring 2012 Grants Intern (Graduate Students only)

The Grants Intern will assist staff in researching grant-giving foundations and grants, compose descriptions of grant-givers and grants for staff review, and maintain a grants database. Intern will also assist staff in drafting grant request, grant stewardship, and reporting. The ideal candidate will have excellent research and writing skills and an interest in non-profit management.

Duties:

  • Research and report on grant-giving foundations and grants
  • Grant research and writing
  • Maintain a grant database
  • Assist in grant stewardship, including thank you letters and reporting

Experience in grant research and writing is desired, but not required. Interest in the Middle East, Israel-Palestine issues, refugee issues, or the UN, are also a plus.
